Portoferraio Elba
A shorter stay today in Portoferraio, departing at 2pm. The forecast calls for rain later, so we get off early for our walk around. It's a very pretty town, lots of stairs, and narrow cobblestone streets with twists and turns, The town is crowned by 3 forts, Stella, Falcone and Medicee. This is one of the islands that Napoleon was exiled in, so there are mentions of him in many places. The town is quite quiet now, but I'm sure it's hopping in season. The harbour is full of sailboats, and ferries come here from several towns.
Karen and I walk up to the forts for some great views. The skies are threatening but the rain holds off until we're almost back at the ship. Luckily the Azamara umbrellas are sturdy, as there were a few gusts of wind as we approached the ship! Back on board for a cappuccino, a relax and read, and then lunch. The wind is really picking up, and the captain makes an announcement that we will be heading into wind and waves tonight, recommending that anyone who suffers from motion sickness to take medication early.
After departure we go to the destination talk on Sorrento and the Amalfi coast. Then up to the Living Room lounge on deck 10. The motion is very pleasant at this point.
A lazy afternoon, then a lovely French themed dinner in the dining room. We're trucking along, but the motion doesn't seem that much, at least on the lower decks!
