Life onboard Viking Hermod

This was our first cruise on Viking, and we have been impressed by the service, the food, the tours, and how well everything has been organized. We had a cabin on the lowest deck with the window high up on the wall, right by the waterline. The cabin was very comfortable and well designed, with quite a bit of storage. Lots of outlets both 110 and 220, accepting both American and European plug types. A small fridge and TV with Viking information as well as Movies and shows. The internet worked well for emails and browsing everywhere except the top sundeck.

The food was excellent with several choices at each meal. They took great care for anyone with food allergies or preferences. The wine was local and a good standard. Beer and wine included with lunch and dinner, mimosas at breakfast also included. Other drinks are not included and can add up.

The included tours had great guides, and the whisper vox equipment made the guides easy to hear even though the group sizes were usually between 30 and 40. The included tours were in the morning, with optional tours available in the afternoon for additional cost. We did not go on any of those, as it would have made the trip too hectic to our mind. It was nice to have the afternoon free to either relax or wander on your own.

The atmosphere onboard is very friendly, people are eager to mix and socialize. Tables are mostly for 6 or 8, with a few larger. Clientele is overwhelmingly American, a few other Canadians and 3 Brits. I heard that there were a couple from Australia, but didn't meet them. Although the majority of people were 60 plus, there were a few younger people (20s & 30s) travelling with family, and some 40s to 50s. A certain amount of mobility is needed, as there is a fair bit of walking involved.

It's certainly interesting talking to the other guests who have done many Viking Cruises. They are very loyal to Viking, both the River cruises and the Ocean. And they seem surprised that there may be other companies that offer a similar product!
